5 Reasons to be a TV-free family

We are a TV-free family. That means we don’t have a single TV in our home. For reals. It was a choice we made seven years ago and you can read all about it here. It is one of the best decisions my husband and I made for our family. Was it easy? No, but it has been so worth it. Monday begins Screen-Free Week, and we invite you to become a TV-free family.

5 Reasons to be a a TV-free family

1. Save money! Since we said adios to cable, we have saved over $5500 these past seven years (and that is a very conservative estimate). And that isn’t even factoring in all the gear you need to watch TV: an actual television, speakers, DVD player, DVR, a TV stand, etc.

2. Get creative. Trade in your screen time for crafts, books, board games, puzzles and cooking. I will admit– not having a TV on for kids takes more involvement for parents. But that is really a good thing! My husband made this cardboard TV with the kids last week. My 4-year old painted it and then his friends came over and they drew pictures of “pretend tv shows” and seriously watched it.

3. Rethink home design. With no TV to arrange your couch around, the possibilities of interior design are endless. Stage it like a game room, or make it a library setting. It’s really a lot of fun!

4. Enjoy a peaceful home. With no background noise, the home feels so much more peaceful. There are less distractions, which makes it easier for me to be in the moment with my family.

5. No commercials.  Our children rarely see a commercial and this has dramatically helped our shopping trips to Target. Our 4-year old would honestly prefer shopping at Lowes and buying rope, nails and tape, than a toy at Target.

Great idea, but what about the Disney movies? In our family we love Disney movies. Thats why we have a tv and a dvd player. But we watch it only on the weekends.
